Welcome to Pittsburgh! Some may refer to Pittsburgh as the Steel City, Steelers Country and typically a sports town. The colors black and gold shine everywhere throughout the major professional sport teams in this city. Pittsburgh houses the Pirates at PNC Park, Steelers at Heinz field, and Penguins at The Consol Energy Center.
Another sports team that has gained more recognition this past year is the arena football team, the Pittsburgh Power. The Power also shares the bold black and gold colors. The Power is a part of the AFL (arena football league) and their season started March 23rd. The end of the season comes at the end of July including 18 regular season games. To view more about the Power you can go online at pittsburghpowerfootball.com. There you will find the 2013 schedule, roster and tickets to see the Power in action.
Now here is a team that most don’t know much about in the Pittsburgh area, The Pittsburgh Passion. The Passion are in their 11th season. Most do not hear about this group of women because football is seen as a man sport and woman playing the game now takes a back seat to the Steelers or the Power. Their team colors are also black and gold. They have an 8 game season that started April 6th until early June. The mission of this team is not to just go out and play a game of football but to teach life lessons through sports. The Passion will play their 5th game of the season Saturday May 11th at their new home field Highmark Stadium in Station Square. For ticket information and to learn more about this Passion team go to pittsburghpassion.com.
This may be a shock to some but who knew Pittsburgh had a Soccer team founded in 1999? The Riverhounds started out playing their games at Bethal Park high school field along with 5 other fields but recently moved over to their new home at Highmark Stadium in Station Square. The Riverhounds plan to join Major League Soccer within ten years from 2013. Highmark Stadium will initially seat 3,500 spectators, though the team plans for an eventual expansion to 18,500. The Riverhounds season started April 6th and will end in August playing 26 games in the regular season. For more information, go to riverhounds.com.
It does not end there though. Be on the lookout for new teams that will make its mark in the Steel City. There is an upcoming Basketball Team called the Pittsburgh Bullets founded by Marcus Robinson who is a Pittsburgh native graduating in 2006 as the star basketball player for Taylor Alderdice high school. There is talk about having a lingerie football team and maybe by a long stretch of money an NBA will make its way to Pittsburgh, PA. But for now Pittsburgh has a handful of sport teams to watch out for.
